Lead through technology transfer – hydrostatic drives in the wind power sector

With the transfer of development and method competence to regenerative energies, the innovative and flexible service provider RLE INTERNATIONAL is setting a new trend.

Inspired by the subjects of electrics/electronics and hybrid, the Cologne-based development engineers started wondering about the extent to which their core competences can be transferred to other sectors facing similar tasks.

It was quickly determined that gear development in particular as well as the fields of simulation and calculation directly concern the wind power branch as well.

Manufacturers of wind power plants could benefit from the decades of experience available to the automotive specialists!

Wind Turbine with Hydrostatic Drivetrain:

Wind turbine with hydrostatic drivetrain (Gondola)

Advantages of the RLE INTERNATIONAL concept:

  • Increase in performance through repowering in the case of existing on-shore wind power plants
  • Increase in power yield from wind energy
  • Reduced costs for investment and the operation of wind power plants by improving early fault detection
  • Use of new materials
  • Improvement in the support structures of off-shore wind power plants by improving their design and ease of assembly
  • Reduction of system weight of the pod and thus of the support structure
  • Reduction in structural load on the drive train and thus on the support structure
  • Increase in degree of automation in production for installation, operation and servicing by using standard components and a modular design
  • Improvement of the network connection of off-shore parks
  • Wind energy-specific energy storage

Advantages compared with mechanical gears:

  • Constant generator drive with a tolerance of 0.3 Hz
  • Oscillation freedom thanks to hydrostatic attenuation
  • Modular design with many standard purchased parts
  • Weight reduction despite equal performance
  • Little space required
  • Variable arrangement of pump and motor
  • (possible) omission of mechanical braking equipment
  • Low expenditure for maintenance and monitoring
  • Straightforward repairs thanks to modular unit replacement
  • Long service life and safe operation
